Read MorePositioned at the "south end" of the village of Prittlewell, this now bustling town was once merely a fishing village. However, with the advent of the railway in the 19th Century, along with a royal visit from Princess Caroline, Southend transformed itself into a popular seaside destination. A pier and tourist development was constructed and soon people flocked to Southend’s seven miles of glorious beaches ever summer, enjoying sea and sun bathing.
In the 1960s, with the increased accessibility of holidays abroad, Southend’s popularity declined, and since then it has seen major new development into an area of retail and business with structures such as the original Talza Arcade being replaced by shops. Saying that, Southend still manages to attract approximately 6.4 million tourists every year, generating a whopping £200 million.
Built in 1830, Southend pleasure pier is the world’s longest, stretching approximately 1.33 miles! In the 1980s a diesel-hydraulic railway was constructed along the pier, enabling weary tourists to reach the end without having to walk! The end of the pier is home to the famous cafe that Jamie Oliver used for his series ‘Jimmy and Jamie's Friday Food Night’.
In addition to the pier, Southend is also known for The Kursaal, although this early theme park was demolished in the 1970s. Where it lay, there are mostly just houses today; however, its impressive entrance hall remains, now converted into a bowling alley and arcade and is a listed building. A modern sea-front amusement park, Adventure Island, can now be enjoyed by visitors to the town and boasts over 50 exciting rides. Also on the seafront you can find the "Sea-Life Adventure" aquarium. Until recently, the Cliff Gardens and their Victorian bandstand were another attraction but erosion meant that parts of the area became unsafe for public access and so the bandstand was demolished and re-erected in Priory Park.
Dyno is a plumbing service with a difference: not only do we offer emergency plumbing and leak detection services to the residents of Southend, granting our clients peace of mind that we’re here to cover every eventuality, but we can also replace old water pipes, fit modern heating and boilers and install toilets and bathrooms.
