Colchester, Essex

The ancient town of Colchester is an exciting place for archaeologists: Palaeolithic flint tools and nearly a thousand pieces of pottery from the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages have been discovered there. In addition to these findings, there is a Neolithic henge and a few Bronze Age barrow cemeteries too. The town is reputedly the oldest recorded town in the United Kingdom as it was referred to by Pliny the Elder, who died in AD 79! During the Roman inhabitation of Britain, Colchester was the capital town and known as Camulodunum; however, it was destroyed during Boudica's rebellion in AD 61 and soon after London was established as the new capital city. Recently the Colchester Archaeological Trust excavated the remains of a Roman chariot race track in the city.

In the 11th century Colchester Castle was erected above the vaults of the old Roman temple. Many other medieval ruins charm visitors to Colchester, including the entrance to St. John's Abbey and the Augustinian priory of St. Botolph. During the 14th century Colchester quickly expanded and became an important town in terms of the woollen cloth industry, becoming well-known across Europe for its production of ‘russets’.

Since the Roman era, Colchester has been an important military garrison and is currently occupied by the  16th Air Assault Brigade. Additionally, the Army's single military corrective training centre can be found on the outskirts of the town, holding servicemen and women who have to serve periods of detention.

Today Colchester has undergone major regeneration, including the erection of residential developments in Mile End and Braiswick. Much land which had previously been owned by the Ministry of Defence has been sold for housing and parts of the old garrison have been demolished or dismantled and moved.

With our reassuring emergency plumbing and leak detection services, the people of Colchester can relax safe in the knowledge that, should disaster strike, we’re here to replace those old water pipes and save the day. In addition, we also fit modern heating and boilers and install new toilets and stylish bathrooms.
