Read MoreMore than 800 years ago, it was decided that Chelmsford would be the location of a weekly market; this simple decision initiated the growth of the town, along with its proximity to London and position on the Londinium – Camulodonum Roman road which is now the A12. Evidence of ancient inhabitation has been discovered in the town, including an Anglo-Saxon burial site, and Neolithic, Bronze Age and Roman settlements.
Chelmsford was notably involved in the 1381 Peasants' Revolt, which was a huge rebellion caused by socio-economic and political tensions as well as high taxes. King Richard II moved on to Chelmsford after suppressing the uprising in the capital, most probably staying at a local manor house in Writtle. After his intervention, many of the leaders of the mutiny were hung at what is now known as Primrose Hill.
Today Chelmsford is the site of many new housing developments, including Beaulieu Park, The Village and Chancellor Park. There are two shopping centres in the town, as well as three retail parks. The pedestrianized High Street houses many independent retailers as well as the leading High Street names. One of Chelmsford’s main attractions has to be its vibrant nightlife; it boasts many busy nightclubs, thriving pubs, plush wine bars and busy restaurants. There are also plans for a large area of shops, bars and eating establishments on the banks of the River Chelmer.
When visiting the city, tourists should see the Victorian railway viaduct which has an incredible eighteen arches and spans the River Can. Also of interest might be Chelmsford Cathedral which is the second smallest cathedral in the country.
